GSI Women in Franchising

In our second edition of GSI’s Women in Franchising, we’re highlighting Erin Goulet and Lissa Knox, on-site owners of The Goddard School located in Snohomish, WA. We asked this mother-daughter team to tell us about their experience as female entrepreneurs and advice they would give other women who have similar ambitions.

GSI: How has Goddard supported your dreams of being an entrepreneur?

Goulet & Knox: The Goddard opportunity represents an alignment of so many values that are important to us as entrepreneurs. It has created an opportunity to serve families in our community in a meaningful way, to create a supportive workplace for our team and to receive support and guidance from a franchisor that reflects our values. Within our market of Goddard Schools here in the Pacific Northwest we have had the opportunity to collaborate closely with our peers which has been incredibly fulfilling and strengthens what we are all able to offer to our communities.

GSI: How have you grown as a leader and business owner since opening your own Goddard School?

Goulet & Knox: We have experienced how transformative it is to give to others. This is true for our individual business, that doing our best to serve our employees and our families to the best of our abilities are the path to a successful program. We have also experienced this to be true as franchisees within a larger system. The effective partnership among our peers and across our system drives the success of our entire brand. We have also experienced how fulfilling this kind of meaningful partnership can be to our experience as business owners.

GSI: What guidance would you give other women who are driven to become entrepreneurs?

Goulet & Knox: Surround yourself with likeminded women who share your goals and your values in business. Learn from them and do your best to support them and genuinely celebrate their success. This kind of meaningful collaboration makes the work both more manageable and more fulfilling. We are incredibly fortunate to be a part of a network of strong female entrepreneurs through our relationships with our fellow franchisees. We also serve a community of parents that include many women in leadership and entrepreneurial roles. We feel great pride in being a part of these communities of like-minded women.

Goddard School

The Goddard School located in Northlake officially opened on Friday, Nov. 1, and is now enrolling!

Susie Patton and Kaylin Walker, onsite owners of the newest Goddard School, previously taught elementary school children before deciding to open an early childhood education facility of their own. They saw there was a need in their community for a high-quality early childhood education program that provides a play-based learning experience in a nurturing environment.

“Deciding to make the switch from our previous profession, we were comforted in knowing that we would still be working with children and providing what children need – a safe and nurturing environment where they are encouraged to develop a love for learning,” Susie said.

“We want to reach as many children as possible and provide the best-in-class programs to area children,” Kaylin said.

For more than 30 years, The Goddard School has used the most current, academically endorsed methods to ensure that children from six weeks to six years old have fun while learning the skills they need for long-term success in school and in life. Talented teachers collaborate with parents to nurture children into respectful, confident and joyful learners.

Ground-breaking for The Goddard School Lees Summit 3

If you were nearby NE Ralph Powell Road between Woods Chapel and Strother roads in Lee’s Summit on Tuesday, you might have caught a glimpse of construction underway and some people spiking gold shovels into the ground.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held on Tuesday, Oct. 29, to celebrate the construction of the newest Goddard School coming to Lee’s Summit (Lakewood).

The formal ceremony took place at the site of the new School, 3301 NE Ralph Powel Road, where more than a dozen people gathered to join in on the celebration. Those attending the event included members of the Chamber of Commerce, Lee’s Summit City Councilman Rob Binney, community members, along with family and friends of the owners, Abby and Shane Hendren.

“We saw a wonderful opportunity for a sustainable, lifelong business that would add value to the area we love and contribute to our community,” Abby said.

Abby will serve as the on-site of the School. Abby and her husband, Shane, saw there was a need for a high-quality early childhood education program that provides a play-based learning experience in a nurturing environment. That’s why they decided to open up a Goddard School.

The School has an anticipated opening date of spring 2020 and will be open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. At capacity, the 10,000 square-foot-building will serve 170 children ages six months to six years old.

Once complete, the School’s décor will be themed around the Missouri outdoors and include wildlife native to the state and various natural wonders only found in Missouri – from the Ozark Mountains to Missouri forests, caves, lakes and more. The interior will be reflective of Missouri’s wildlife and landscapes and include cedar posts and natural stone accents.

Teaching Your Children About Money

Thursday, January 4th, 2018

Boy with glasses smilingDo you remember being in your teens and your early twenties? Were you low on funds due to unnecessary spending? Help your children learn the value of a dollar in their younger years to help them save later in life. By setting up an allowance, you can teach your children to budget, save and learn the difference between needs and wants.

Offer your children an allowance and let them buy anything they choose with that money for a limited time. Afterwards, talk with your children about what they could have gone without to save money and what was right for them to purchase.

Make a budget with your children. Talk with them about how much they’d like to put in their savings accounts from each allowance and how much they want for personal use. Since young children don’t need to spend money on necessary items, such as food and clothing, be sure to explain that as they get older, they may have to spend their money on many other things that they need. That’s why this is a wonderful time to start saving.

Help your children stick to their budgets, and keep emphasizing how important it is to save money for what they need rather than what they want.

Goddard Systems, Inc. CEO Joe Schumacher explains how The Goddard School’s play-based learning program prepares children for success.

The Goddard School Opens 23 Schools in 2016

Goddard Systems, Inc. (GSI), the franchisor of The Goddard School® preschool system, announces that 2016 was another year of successful expansion, opening 23 new Schools nationwide. With 27 Schools in planning stages for 2017, the leading early childhood education franchise system continues its path toward achieving a five-year development goal of opening 150 new schools by 2020.

Since its inception in 1988, The Goddard School has opened 462 locations with a commitment to developing 156 more units within the next five years, giving 156 families the opportunity to take control of their futures and own their businesses. This rate of growth will result in up to 3,900 new jobs and will benefit approximately 20,000 new students throughout the country.

In 2016, The Goddard School experienced a 100% franchisee renewal agreement rate, a major driver in The Goddard School’s growth, indicating that current franchisees are satisfied and want to continue operating Goddard Schools. The Goddard School awarded more franchise license agreements to existing franchisees in 2016 than in 2014 and 2015 combined. These licenses represented 40% of total licenses awarded in 2016 compared to 24% of the total in 2015, signaling that franchisees have experienced first-hand a continued rise in demand for superior early childhood education in the United States.

Key areas of growth for the brand in the coming year will focus on bringing The Goddard School’s play-based curriculum to new markets across the country, including its first school in Arkansas, coupled with a continued commitment to open schools in major metro areas that will accommodate Millennial parents living and working in their respective state’s city centers.

“With more parents in the workforce than ever before, the need for high-quality childcare has never been higher. With this in mind, we continually seek enterprising, hard-working entrepreneurs to help expand our system across the country in order to provide premium early childhood education to more and more families,” said Joe Schumacher, Chief Executive Officer of Goddard Systems, Inc. “The Goddard School experienced tremendous growth in 2016, and we plan on surpassing those openings in 2017 in an effort to ensure that more children have the opportunity to receive education that helps prepare them for success in school and in life.”

The play-based preschool franchise also plans to encourage more of its Schools to obtain P21 (Partnership for 21st Century Learning) exemplar status, which demonstrates that schools use exemplary 21st century learning practices in preparing students for success in college, career and life. In 2016, The Goddard Schools located in Concord Township, OH, Ladera Ranch, CA, Mooresville, NC and Redmond, WA were awarded P21 exemplar status. Other exemplar Goddard Schools include Cedar Park, TX, Cranberry Township, PA, Fort Mill, SC, Hendersonville, TN and Rock Hill, SC. These nine Schools represent 75% of the nation’s preschools that have earned this distinction.

Long recognized as an industry leader, The Goddard School franchise has been consistently listed in Entrepreneur magazine’s “Franchise 500” ranking as one of the top childcare franchises since 2002.

Premier Preschool Now Open For Enrollment To The City Community

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. (March 16, 2016)Goddard Systems, Inc. (GSI), the franchisor of The Goddard School® preschool system, announces its newest school in Collegeville, PA is open. Located at 500 Springhouse Drive Collegeville, PA 19462, the new school is owned by franchisees Adrienne and Tim Clark and operated by Adrienne.

Prior to joining The Goddard School, Adrienne Clark earned her Bachelor’s Degree from Randolph-Macon Woman’s College. She spent more than 10 years working at PricewaterhouseCoopers in the Adult Learning and Education division where she created and implemented professional development curricula for newly promoted mangers, senior staff and partners. Adrienne and Tim first learned about The Goddard School from a relative who owns a school and were impressed by the successful franchise model, reputation, brand strength and positive working environment. As parents who were also looking for a school for their son, they decided to bring this model to the Collegeville community to provide families in the area with a quality educational program.

The Goddard School preschool system prides itself on its unique dual-management system, a distinguisher in the early childhood education industry. Franchise owners are onsite at each location and work alongside an educational director, whose focus is to communicate and work with teachers, as well as to implement The Goddard School curriculum. This dual-management system ensures a hands-on, community-focused approach when it comes to early childhood education. With each school opening, The Goddard School also has a local economic impact, creating an average of 20 to 25 jobs within the community.

The Goddard School’s play-based approach, called Fun, Learning Experience (or F.L.EX.®), is grounded in research on how children learn best: children experience the deepest, most genuine learning when they are having fun. At The Goddard School, the focus is on building each child’s emotional, academic, social, creative and physical skills to provide a well-rounded experience and ensure each one becomes confident, joyful and fully prepared in school and in life. The Goddard School’s proprietary F.L.EX. curriculum has earned AdvancED and Middle States Corporate Accreditation by demonstrating excellence in early childhood education.

“With nearly 30 years of experience in early childhood education, The Goddard School’s unique dual-management system creates lasting community bonds as owners are on-site at the Schools to provide support to the communities they serve,” said Joe Schumacher, Chief Executive Officer of Goddard Systems, Inc. “One area that truly sets us apart from other childcare systems is our philosophy based on learning through play, designed to teach and reinforce 21st century skills, including social behaviors such as communication, critical thinking, creativity and collaboration. This philosophy fosters a lifelong love of learning and creates meaningful connections at an early age.”

Jobs relating to STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) are currently the fastest growing segment of the U.S. economy, and a focus on developing 21st century skills such as creativity and innovation as well as the abilities to collaborate, communicate and think critically, is expected to increase over time. By introducing 21st century skill concepts early on, children develop a strong foundation and a passion for STEAM at the very beginning of their education.

“My husband and I had always planned to open a business together. After learning about The Goddard School’s outstanding curriculum and progressive franchise model, we immediately knew it was an ideal fit for the family-owned business we had in mind,” said franchisee Adrienne Clark. “Goddard’s incorporation of play-based learning in a positive environment is important to the growth of these kids, and we hope to do our best to inspire, motivate and encourage our young students.”

Long recognized as the industry leader, The Goddard School preschool system has been consistently listed in Entrepreneur magazine’s “Franchise 500” ranking as the number one childcare franchise for 15 consecutive years (January 2016).
